Running Accomplishments:

I have lost 90 pounds. This more than any thing else is my greatest accomplishment. After my collegiate running career I sadly stopped running and kept eating all the way to 265 pounds. After a lot of soul-searching and even more running I am now 175, the same weight I was in college.

Short-Term Running Goals:

Keep running. I simply run for greater health. I enjoy the struggle for self improvement.

Long-Term Running Goals:

I would like to amass enough race t-shirts to make blankets for every bed in the house, as well as finally run a marathon. (Oct 15th SoJo Marathon)

Avg HR 157

Peak HR 186

186 is the highest peak HR recorded since Race For Red 5K on May 21 2011. The HR graph has a nice gradual climb throughout the race. I passed the lactate acid Threshold HR of 173 at the 4 min mark.

Speaking with Chad (from the blog) before the race I mentioned that I would like to run this race at 5:50 mile pace. I based this time off my last 5K race time converted to a 4 mile race. A short way into the race I looked at my Garmin and noticed we were running 5:09 pace, and we were a few seconds off the lead group! I don’t care what race it is, if you are running 5 min/mile pace I have no problem letting you go. Thankfully this pace was mostly a ruse. This pace was driven by some very excited high school runners. The pace slowed as we leveled out from the first down hill part of the course, but I still had a hard time chasing down the front pack. None the less I was able to pass several runners over the next few miles. I was running 4th with about 3/4 mile to go when I caught up to the 3rd pace runner. When I passed him he put up a fight for a while then reluctantly settled in behind me. Entering the last 400m of the race I had about a 1 second lead on 4th. As we rounded the last turn on the track the kid pass me like he was hitting the afterburner button. It was like a Wile Coyote cartoon. I simply did not have the speed to fend him off. Not only that, he beat me by a few second in the last 150m. Ouch. Come to find out the kid specializes in the 1600m, and he is half my age. So all said and done I am very happy with 4th. My Garmin claims that I ran 4.04 miles in 23:00 and my 4 mile time would be 22:47. This puts my average pace at 5:41, nine seconds faster than my goal. I am very happy about that. Looking at the splits they appear a little erratic, but that is mostly caused by the hilly course.

I really don’t think that I have improved 9 seconds per mile since my last race 3 weeks ago. I think this race shows that I have not been digging down to the bottom of my tank in my last races. I think that I need to add a greater degree of wall busting, gut wrenching toughness to my workout program. Perhaps then I will be better adept at emptying my tank on race day.

Nice work Kurt! I knew you'd take a nice placing at this race, and to do a 4 miler faster than your last 5K is awesome. I had to laugh at the wile e coyote reference - you should hear the talk about him around here :)

Great race and way to stick it out! I don't think I could run that fast if my pants were on fire.

Nice race, Yeah those dang high school kids. You pretty much gotta beat them out right cause they will always get us old guys with the kick.

Great race Kurt! Those are some fast miles.

Fantastic race Kurt! Conner is one fast kid. Is was great to meet up with you and I look forward to some long Saturday runs with you. My garmin put the course at 4.04 miles as well but when I exported it to google earth it was somewhat off on where I was on the road (It was probably pretty close to 4 miles even). It looks as though Herriman has a good group of kids.

Great job Kurt, and nice to see the progression as you improve!

Thanks RAD. I appreciate the confidence. Yea that Conner has a fifth gear that I just don’t have. It is going to be fun to watch him at the state championships this fall.

Rob you got that right. The sad thing is I never had that much of a kick even when I was in high school, but that’s OK. I think of my self as more of a marathoner, even though I haven run one yet.

Seth- Coming form a runner like you that is quite a complement, thanks.

Chad- Thank you, and fantastic job on your race as well! I am looking forward to logging some nice long runs with you in the future. It has been quite a while since I have had an opportunity to train with anyone. I think you may be right about the distance of the race. I like to use the garmin more as a constant to make a comparison between various races and training runs. I’m sure it does have accuracy limitations. If you do get a chance to wheel the race though the nerd in me would love to find out what it comes out at. If you come across Coach Barns would you please offer my thanks for the race, it was a fantastic event.

Bonnie- Thanks Bonnie, it feels great to make some improvements. I have plenty more improvements to make to keep up with the runners in this blog.

Thanks for coming to run. Connor is the kid that aced you. He just turned 15 last week, but he was a 4:38 mile kid as a freshman in track, and he ran a 4:31 at our TOU camp, so he has some decent speed.

We will try to make it a little better every year. Next time you have permission to trip any of my kids if it is for a top 3 spot, because that is where the good prizes are.

James- You have a fantastic group of runners there at Herriman High. Thank you for putting on such a great event. If I am still in the state next year I will defiantly be back to take another crack at Connor. If Connor is half as smart as he is fast I’m sure he will have a big fat scholarship waiting for him when he competes in the NCAA. I’m excited to watch him and the rest of the team this fall at Sugarhouse Park. You have an outstanding, classy group of athletes at Herriman High. If there is anything I can do for your program PLEASE let me know.

Great job Kurt Connor is one to watch out for in a race like that but then again he should have been up riding my tail in third place like he has been all summer.
